Food Guide for the Hungry

Get hungry. Get Loot bags. food buff

Let’s talk about consumables in World vs. World. First of all, it’s important to know that there are several types of foods available and they can all be cooked up or bought on the auction house. If you want to cook them, then I suggest looking at the recipes on gw2db here and looking at the price of the recipe to see if it is worth making on guildwarstrade here. If you want to save more money, then look at lvl 65, 70, and lvl 75 food. Food from Zhaitaffy merchants that last 20 minutes are another great cheap alternative. You can skip this article and look to the char below to see all the level 80 foods and their prices.

Popular cheap alternatives include:

  • Bowl of Poultry and Leek Soup (-36% condition duration )(3s84c)
  • Super Veggie Pizza (+36% condition duration) (1s43c)
  • Bowl of Asparagus and Sage Salad  (50% chance to gain swiftness when you kill a foe)(80c)

Feasts, Pots, and Trays are useful for giving food to everyone, but enemies can also eat the food. They last 5 minutes, but the food buff lasts 1 hour. To make a feast, pot, or tray you will need a recipe which you can find on the auction house or you can make for yourself (and learn with 400 cooking). To make the recipe you will need 17 Bottles of Elonian Wine (from Miyani), 50 Mystic Coins, 20 Crystals (from Miyani), and 1 item of food that you want the recipe for. Put these items in the mystic forge to get your recipe. Once you learn the recipe, you can craft the feast in your cooking tab. There is a nice cooking place on your home map in WvW northeast of the citadel waypoint. Every feast/pot/tray requires 10 items of the food from the recipe. So, if you want a tray of omnomberry bars, then you need 10 of the bars to make the tray. This means if you have more than 10 people contributing to a feast then you will save money, and it will last twice as long as eating a 30 minute food item.

In WvW, there are many food choices to use, but it’s up to you to choose the right food for your build and purpose. For example, if I have a build with lots of Vigor and I have a trait that does damage to enemies when I dodge, then I might want to use a Bowl of Orrian Truffle and Meat Stew to give me a stack of might every time I dodge. Or maybe if I am low on swiftness while in a zerg, then I might want to use a  Bowl of Seaweed Salad to get a lot of swiftness for every time I help kill a zerg of people. The standard food for damage is usually the Plate of Truffle Steak Dinner or variant that gives power for 30 seconds upon killing an enemy, however for GvG or small group combat then a Bowl of Curry Butternut Squash Soup may be of more service for 100 precision and 10% critical strike damage. Many foods have abilities that empower you or debuff your enemy on a given chance when you crit or hit your enemy and these are generally only for people with at least 30-40% critical strike chance or people with lots of Fury boon. Standard defensive foods include Bowl of Lemongrass Poultry Soup for -condition duration, Omnomberry Bread for vitality and toughness, and Omnomberry Compote for gaining health on kills. Fun fact, sigils and food that reward you for killing enemies do not have a cooldown, but most have cooldowns for chance to hit or crit abilities. Omnomberry Pie used to be the most popular food in WvW before it was nerfed so that it has an internal cooldown of 1 second, but it heals for 325 health still which makes it pretty popular. For condition builds, Rare Veggie Pizza and variants is king, although Saffron Stuffed Mushroom is really good too.

Oil up for Bag City.utility buff

One of the most bodacious ways to power up your character is to eat your food and oil together because you can always have a food and oil buff active at the same time. By default, they last 30 minutes but there are 1 hour versions that you will find if you search Potent in the auction house which may save you money. Buy lower level versions (quality on tp) to save money. Each of these utility buffs can help compliment your build to give you the extra precision killing needed for decimating noobs. There are three main oils, as listed below. Oils/stones/crystals:

  • Master Maintenance Oil: Gain precision equal to 6% of your toughness. Gain precision equal to 4% of your vitality. 10% extra experience gain.
  • Superior Sharpening Stone: Gain power equal to 6% of your toughness. Gain power equal to 4% of your vitality. 10% extra experience gain.
  • Master Tuning Crystal: Gain condition damage equal to 6% of your toughness. Gain condition damage equal to 4% of your vitality. 10% extra experience gain.

There is also the Potion of Karka Toughness which gives 150 toughness for one hour. To buy this, you need to talk to a Southsun Economist after securing all four settlements. He is in every settlement. It costs 5 karka shells and one passion flower.

Below is a chart of all level 80 foods sorted by their price on October 14 2013. To the right is the variants of the 30 minute food in 20 min, 45 min, and 1 hour forms. So, if you want to save money I suggest buying the 20 minute food. Note: all 45 minute food gives +15% experience, while regular food gives 10%. Kralkachocolate Bar and Bowl of Saffron-Mango Ice Cream gives +5% karma gain instead of experience gain.
